Every year, it has been MOOD INDIGO’s indefatigable endeavour to bring out some snazzy new stuff that, along with the added advantage of taking you on a roller coaster ride of utter fun, introduces to you a new art form originating in some nook or corner of the world.

We bring this time a martial arts cum dance art form originated from Brazil!
Capoeira as a sport is played in several different ways, the two most common being Angola and Regional. In both there are defence and attack moves that are accompanied and even lead by the music and songs that the master (mestre) and students play and sing. Distinctive from other martial arts by this music, the continuous movement of the players and the minimal contact involved it is often (mis)taken for a dance. However, lets not the grace and flexibility of the players hide their strength and skill.
And as you can infer, the art form actually banishes the idea of violence and is a form of physical training where you concentrate solely on the stamina and fitness of the body with a complacent mind and peaceful spirits.
A Capoeira performance is in the offing this Mood Indigo, where you shall witness the feat among myriad others in the Carnival.

Alexandre Stolypine aka Psyckoze is a Paris based graffiti artist. From 1984, he has made his mark in the streets and catacombs of France. On city walls, canvas or recovered materials, he potrays faceless characters, a symbol of humanity without frontiers and challenges the public by imposing colour in a dull environment.

With vibrant colours and eye catching displays by him at Mood Indigo 09 you wouldnt want to miss him and his exemplary artifacts.

JonOne

John Perello aka JonOne is a Paris based graffiti artist. His 'free style' is his trade mark and colour is his leitmotiv. He has had exhibitions the world over from Paris to Hong Kong to New York. He continues to paint his name on the blinds of paris storefronts when night falls, because "it is a need, a mean of returning to sources and keeping one's feet on the ground".

Stompbox

Saturday, November 28, 2009

ATS (Abhimanyu Tony Sound) is a recently formed Mumbai-based Group. Now, I'm confused whether to call them a music group or a dance group because they do it all!

Abhimanyu and Tony are experienced and well-established choreographers in their own right, but their act is refreshingly new to India. Stomping and Beatboxing individually require immense talent and to do it together is unimagineable. ATS Group will showcase their performance at Mood Indigo 2009. The versatility on display will leave you spellbound.
Watch their performance on Entertainment Ke Liye Aur Bhi Kuch Karega on Sony Entertainment Television. Just listen to what the judges say.

Legilimency

"The mind is not a book to be opened at will and examined at leisure." - Severus Snape.
But this is exactly what Mr. Chaitanya Tamhane (inset pic) does.
Mind Reading or Mentalism is no magic trick. It's a beautiful science which Chaitanya has mastered with years of study and practice. He will be performing this year at our very own Mood Indigo.
Apart from this, Chaitanya has also directed the play Grey Elephants in Denmark and has co-directed Medha and Zoombish 2 with Ramu Ramanathan.
The performance will make you go.. "How did he guess that?" and "OMG I hope he doesn't know what I'm thinking about this girl sitting next to me"
If you think you can hide your thoughts, think again... perhaps he would have seen your re-thought too!

Sand O'Bottle

Friday, November 27, 2009

Sand-in-a-Bottle
There cant be a better word to describe this event than FANTABULOUS!!!

Sand art, as it is commonly known, started as a souvenir to those who ventured to the Petra mountains in Jordan and has now spread to various parts of the world with each region adding its own flavour to the discipline. It involves making layers of different colours of sand to create various different pictures in the sand.

What started in the 1920's as a simple combination of coloured sands has grown so much over the years with more intricate detailing and inclusion of figures like camels that today sand art is creating ripples all over the world . The craft is simply put elegant. So get ready as this year, Mood Indigo brings to you Sand Art in the form of Jordanian artist, Younes Noaimat.

So prepare to get arty as sand, funnel and bottles replace the traditional art tools in an effort to create masterpieces in the layers of sand.

Ebru- A Turkish Islamic Art

We've all heard of people walking on water . Now come and watch someone paint on it. Yeah literally!!!
Still unclear?? Well, Ebru art is an art form that has little familiarity with Indians. It probably rings a bell when we use the term 'marbling' to describe this discipline. This technique employs hand made dyes and hand made brushes to mount a marble form onto paper.

So, Turkish Art Scholar Hicabi Gulgen comes to Mood Indigo this year to exhibit this exotic art form. A Master in Turkish-Islamic Arts, Hicabi spends a lot of time practicing classical Turkish techniques in Ebru. At Mood Indigo 2009, you will get a chance to see Hicabi's sensational works, and if your lucky, try your hand  at marbling. Not something worth missing for sure !!!!

Jake's Women

Genre : Theatre Play (English)

Duration : 120 minutes

So want to have fun? Then come to
Jake's Women - A play of Akvarious Production

America's premier comic playwright makes another hilarious foray into the world of modern relationships. Jake, a novelist who is more successful with fiction than with life, faces a marital crisis by daydreaming about the women in his life. The wildly comic and sometimes moving flashbacks played in his mind are interrupted by visitations from actual females.
Jake's women include a revered first wife who was killed years earlier in an accident, his daughter who is recalled as a child but is now a young woman, his boisterous and bossy sister, an opinionated analyst, his current wife who is leaving Jake for another man, and a prospective third wife. Jake and his women definitely deliver some of the funniest lines of contemporary theatre.

Money Brother

Thursday, November 12, 2009

Genre: Rock, Soul, Punk, Reggae and Pop
Country: Sweden

MONEYBROTHER walked straight in to peoples hearts with his gold selling, Grammy awarded, striking debut album "Blood Panic" in 2003. Back again to fill us with his smooth soul, rock, punk and pop songs, this time around with even stronger tunes on his conscience.

Originally of punkrock fame for his vocals in Monster, in 2003 Anders Wendin took a new direction with his solo project Moneybrother: This is where he creates his custom soul orientated blend of all the music styles he likes to listen to, making moods and details from genres like reggae, rock'n'roll or even disco subliminally swing underneath.

No matter if the music makes you happy or sad, first of all things Moneybrother wants to move his audience. Moneybrother has a magnifying effect: Music and lyrics reflect ordinary people - but larger than life.

Moriarty

Genre: Indie / Folk / Rock
Country: France

Moriarty, it's a strange universe somewhere between France and the United States, between folk music, rock, country and blues. It’s a "family" of five musicians: the diva Rosemary Moriarty (singer, xylophone, thumb piano, spoons, tambourine) and her four brothers Thomas (chromatic and diatonic harmonicas, kazoo, drilling machines, Jew's harp), Arthur (Tchekovian guitar), Zim (double-bass, acoustic guitar, music box, suitcase drum) and Charles (electric and resonator guitars). It's five musicians made for the stage, one extraordinary voice, and a lot of stories they simply have to tell you. They have been playing together for years in cellars and bars before releasing an album, almost by accident, which has since gone gold in France.

Bohemian, artists, storytellers - Moriarty is a part of Mood Indigo's collaboration with the mega festival - “Bonjour India: Celebrating France in India” organised by the French government.

The Indian Core

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Genre: New Age Instrumental
Country: Norway

This year, under the banner of The International Music Festival, Mood Indigo presents to the critically acclaimed Norwegian contemporary jazz group, The Indian Core that has managed to fuse jazz oriented western performers with renowned Indian music performers

.

The band grew out of a tour of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh by The Core in 2006 , where they found three musical soul mates in the Indian performers Prasenjit Mitra, Kanchman Babbar and Fateh Ali. The desire to play together seemed completely natural as both sets of musicians have a common point of departure in their own folk music and to a large extent utilise improvisation. According to the critics this tour was an experience above and beyond the ordinary, a beautiful interaction between saxophone, flute and sitar, and double bass, piano and tablas.

The climax was the recording session for their first CD which captures the magic of the musical collaboration between East and West with its mix of contemporary jazz and traditional Indian music.

Performers :
Kirsti Huke - Vocals
Fateh Ali - Sitar
Jørgen Mathisen - Saxophones/Clarinet
Erlend Slettevoll - Piano
Steinar Raknèz - Bass
Prasenjit Mitra - Tabla
Espen Aalberg - Drums

Charkha

For the first time ever, Mood Indigo brings to you the simple and yet so legendary charkha.

As we all know the charkha is a device used to spin thread or yarn, but for almost every Indian, it certainly holds much greater significance. The centre of Mahatma Gandhi's Swadeshi movement, this valiant symbol of defiance, which was the centre of the first - ever tricolour, is sure to lure many a viewer during this year's Mood Indigo.

I guess with all the jeans and sneakers into our blood we have lost the Retro touch a tad bit.
So, if you're looking to spin your own cloth during the time of recession, or pervade your veins with patriotism, head over to the charkha demo sessions, presented in association with Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal, to get a first-hands experience of the wheel that started a revolution only at Mood Indigo '09.

Modified bikes

What happens when you see a news article that says "John Abraham buys a new Harley Davidson"? Or when you read an article on the best looking bikes in the world?? You start drooling on the picture of the bike that is given alongside the article and the maximum you do is cut out the picture and stick it on the wall alongside your bed. You sleep in the night looking at the photo everyday, wishing and hoping that you'll buy one of these one day.
But, what if I tell you that you don't need to buy a super-bike at all to own of your dreams??

The solution?? MODIFIED BIKES!!!

Bikes that have been modified beyond your imagination. Bikes that will seem like a creation from another world. The work done by the awesome mechanics and designers is like a kiss by the princess that transforms a frog into a prince.
But can modified bikes compare with bikes like Hayabusa? YES, they can and trust me,it costs you peanuts as compared to buying a super-bike!! Change is the order of today and what better than changing your normal bike into one of the most wacky and sought after bike in town!!
